Integrating Shame and Reclaiming Sexuality with Lauren Scott

Without acceptance, without representation, we will internalize ideas that we are not enough as we are, and we will make ourselves smaller and smaller, attempting to disappear and divorce ourselves from our bodies. Shame will force us to install triggers to protect ourselves. But there is power in doing the big work of reclaiming our pleasure and the wisdom of our bodies. This is the work Lauren Scott shares with the world and which I had the joy of talking with her about.

In this conversation, we discuss:

  • her experience growing up as a Black woman in a predominantly white area of Colorado and feeling that she had to cut off parts of herself to fit in

  • how her experience affected her feelings around her own appearance and sexuality

  • how deep shame was installed in her through church and purity culture, and grew into a way for her to protect herself

  • how she came to a breaking point that allowed her to deconstruct her spirituality and sexuality, and ultimately to trust herself

  • the core wound that causes many women to leave their body, run to the safety of the head, and looking for guidance from outside, instead of trusting the wisdom inside of ourselves

  • how she grew to tap into her ‘felt sense’ – tuning into the sensations inside herself- and how she’s learned to sit with and sooth anxiety through difficult experiences

  • how women have been conditioned to not allow themselves the permission to feel good and how it is vital for us to learn to integrate all parts of ourselves and to live in pleasure

  • how to identify our triggers and accept them to begin the reclamation journey – the process of shedding layers of conditioning and stringing together moments of wholeness and love

  • why pleasurable self care amongst women is imperative for us being able to show up and care for others, despite what we’ve been taught about the importance of sacrifice and the denial of pleasure
